About Basia

Bio

I am a university qualified mixed media artist living in the magnificent Blue Mountains.

I began my career in graphic design but changed directions artistically when my inner journey led me to explore the powerful transformative power of yoga and meditation. My art is now more fluid, mirroring my practice, and my creations are themselves vessels for inner enquiry.

I use the organic medium of alcohol and homemade natural inks. Creating abstract works with unexpected forms and vibrant earth colours. My process is itself a form of meditation, with each layer teaching me a new lesson through creation, whether that be letting go or practicing presence and awareness.

I hope my work brings joy to others and a feeling of connection to the beauty and mystery of nature and to one’s own inner world.

Artist Statement

These artworks, with artfully placed illustrations layered on top of an organic landscape dance between spontaneity and deliberate action.

Working with the medium of alcohol-based inks for the background provides little control, allowing for a more natural and organic look that creates a juxtaposition with the precise nature of the line-work and illustrations. It is the unpredictable nature of this medium that leads me to select it for the backgrounds, as it produces beautiful textures and patterns that tend to mirror those in nature, and it teaches me to let go of the control I usually have with traditional techniques; let go of my expectations, my agenda and be in the open space of creation – letting creation itself create through me.

This is then contrasted with the second layer/second process where I illustrate patterns and forms which follow the feeling of the background piece and are intuitively drawn. This part while still containing flow has a lot more deliberate and specific placement and hones in my attention, as well as the attention of the viewer.

This process I have while creating these pieces really reflects the meditative path. From the openness and rawness of our essence and pure awareness to focusing in and being fully present with the specific moment of creation.

Artist Bio

Basia Nowacki is a mixed media artist currently based out of the mid Blue Mountains.

Getting her start within the field of graphic design, Basia later changed directions artistically. Inspired by her inner journey she moved into the field of yoga teaching and meditation, she is now working in a more fluid way that mirrors her practice.

Having earned a Visual Communications and Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Technology, in Sydney, her first pursuit into professional art was through visual design.

More recently, Basia went through some life and location changes that led to new artistic inspiration. This brought her to take up the organic medium of alcohol-based inks and illustration, creating abstract works with organic forms and vibrant earth colours.

Basia has been an artist since early childhood, even being recognised for her art as young as kindergarten and displayed

her work as part of an exhibition for ArtExpress which featured outstanding student works for the HSC examination in Visual Arts in New South Wales.

Later on through university, she has always been a creative winning awards in Photography and Design.

Much of the inspiration for Basia’s recent work goes hand in hand with her love for and practice of yoga and meditation. Her surroundings also serve as a major influence, as she is now living surrounded by nature. She views the creation of her pieces as a form of meditation in their own right, and they spring to life in a very fluid way. Each layer of her work teaches her a new lesson through creation, whether that be on letting go, or practicing presence and awareness.

She hopes, through her work, to bring joy to others, and a feeling of connection, both to nature and to the viewer’s inner self, as well as an appreciation of the beauty and mystery of nature.

Receive

  • a journey – as your eyes travel the landscape of the artwork
  • feelings of intrigue and wonder with a hint of something familiar that resonates deep within you
  • the hint of something familiar is a memory or a feeling of an experience with the natural world
  • because my works resemble patterns and forms found in nature it brings nature into your home
  • feelings of something primordial, elemental, ancient and spiritual that also resides with you and your life
  • the brightness of the colours bring a sense of aliveness and energy
  • the hues, tones and colour combinations along with the patterns and forms also bring a sense of ease and balance

Because my art is created by connecting to my natural surroundings through meditation – my artworks bring the viewer into a connection to the natural world ( even though they may be viewing the world inside). In todays world where we spend so much time indoors and view objects that are far removed from a natural energy, my works bring in the earthy, primal fundamental beauty of nature and the blessings natter gives, such as appreciation, joy, freshness, aliveness, balance, clarity ability to go with the flow, accept change and be comfortable in the unknown.
